GUYTON \u2014 The Guyton Police Department isn\u2019t quite where Chief James Breletic wants it to be but it\u2019s getting closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople don\u2019t realize it but we\u2019ve been running full time since October of last year,\u201d Breletic said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breletic dreamed of running a 24\/7 operation for more than a year. He was named chief in March 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Achieving his goal has produced the desired result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur crime still is lower,\u201d he said, \u201c and I give credit to where that is due \u2014 and that\u2019s to my officers (because of) high-visibility patrolling, checking on neighborhoods, our businesses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m grateful for that. I really and truly am. They are good folks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Effingham County Sheriff\u2019s Office still provides support to the Guyton Police Department but not to the extent before the 24\/7 development. Guyton had only three officers they day Breletic was hired, including himself. Now there are seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe do a lot of direct patrols,\u201d Breletic said. \u201cThat means an officer goes into a neighborhood and says, \u2018I\u2019m in your neighborhood and I\u2019m on patrol.\u2019 People see us there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven in the middle of the night when you don\u2019t see us, we are out there. That\u2019s helping us deter the crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another effort to enhance visibility, the department is in the process of changing the color of its fleet of vehicles from black to white. Its newest cars are accented with bright red and blue decals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are not ninjas,\u201d Breletic said. \u201cWe made the cars brighter so that we can be seen. They are reflective so they can bee seen at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you are driving down the road, it gives the citizen the benefit of the doubt or if they are looking for the police.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to a move by the Guyton City Council, visibility works two ways for the department. It approved the purchase of four in-car cameras that allow officers to maintain a 360-degree view of what\u2019s around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breletic said his department takes every call seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we get a case, we investigate it to our fullest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chief said his department works well with Effingham County\u2019s other law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have been blessed with the Sheriff\u2019s Office, Springfield Police Department and Rincon Police Department \u2014 everybody,\u201d Breletic said. \u201cWe will also work with out-of-state agencies. It\u2019s changed the dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow people are coming to talk to us and we are sharing more information. It\u2019s all about helping each other out, so we are doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breletic said the city\u2019s lone Neighborhood Watch program has been a success. It was launched a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat has done great,\u201d chief said. \u201cWe are still keeping up with its forefather, John Pelote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pelote asked for the department to curb speeding in his neighborhood. Within a month, he estimated the violations were reduced by \u201c60-70 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about just throwing (speed limit) signs up. It\u2019s about working together,\u201d Breletic said. \u201c… We welcome working with everyone. We really and truly do because we can only do as well as the public can help us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy officers all have the same philosophies. They want to get out there. They are community oriented.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
