CITY OF OGLETHORPE APPOINTS VETERAN LAW ENFORCEMENT LEADER JAMES BRELETIC AS CHIEF OF POLICE

OGLETHORPE, GA — The City of Oglethorpe City Council is pleased to announce the appointment of veteran law enforcement leader James G. Breletic as Chief of Police, a position he officially assumed in November 2024. Chief Breletic brings decades of law enforcement, investigative, and command experience to the City of Oglethorpe, where he oversees municipal law enforcement operations and works to strengthen public safety and community partnerships.

Chief Breletic’s extensive career in Georgia law enforcement includes serving as Chief of Police in Guyton, Georgia, and Chief of Police in Lake Park, Georgia. His previous leadership experience also includes serving as Deputy Chief of Police and Chief of Detectives in Clarkston, Georgia, as well as a senior investigator in Forest Park, Georgia.

Since taking command of the Oglethorpe Police Department, Chief Breletic has emphasized community-oriented policing and responsiveness to the needs of Oglethorpe residents. His priorities include maintaining an accessible police department, strengthening communication between officers and citizens, addressing community concerns, and ensuring officers provide professional and respectful law enforcement services.

A key focus has also been recruiting and hiring qualified police officers who are committed to serving the community. Chief Breletic continues to strengthen the department by emphasizing officer training, professional development, accountability, and preparedness. Training efforts are designed to provide officers with the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to respond effectively to the wide range of situations encountered in modern policing.

The department continues working to strengthen relationships with residents, businesses, community organizations, local government, and neighboring public safety agencies. Chief Breletic believes effective policing requires officers to understand the community they serve, listen to citizens’ concerns, and work collaboratively to identify and address public safety needs.

Under Chief Breletic’s leadership, the Oglethorpe Police Department remains committed to professionalism, community engagement, officer development, proactive policing, and responsive service to the citizens of Oglethorpe.
